We love working with babies. We probably have a million reasons why, from their tiny smiles to their incredibly soft skin, and baby photo sessions are definitely some of our favorite things in the world. It’s our greatest privilege to capture that special relationship between a mother and her little one, and it’s precious to witness the unique personalities of all these many new humans. Actually, that’s one of the biggest reasons to let the babies lead when it comes to posing! We love making sure we represent the personalities of everyone that comes through our doors, and with babies, that looks like letting them do their own thing instead of posing them ourselves.
We like to make sure that your baby is the center of attention, so each session has a minimalistic and natural focus. We always use natural light and a white background in our small but mighty studio to accomplish this and ensure that what makes your child special is front and center. This captures the essence of who your baby is, and that’s our style. With every little one we photograph, we realize just how unique each one is when we lay them down on our set. Some will curl up, or stretch out and smile, or others will reach out their hands as if they were trying to give us little high fives. Other times, we wrap them up in our softest fabrics to keep them snug and warm so we can capture your little one peacefully sleeping and work our way around our set to document those little baby details. Baby led sessions can be done in less than half the time than shoots heavily staged with props and best of all this style of newborn photography can be done comfortably in our studio with babies up to 2 months old which is ideal for newborns who can’t come in right away or mothers needing to stay home a little longer to recover. It’s moments like those that we long to create, even past the fresh newborn stage because they’re the important ones that their families will cherish forever while they are still so little.
It’s always inevitable in each session to have mom laugh and say something like, ‘she makes that face so much, we’re afraid it’ll freeze that way’, or ‘we have an ultrasound picture of him in that exact pose!’. Those poses are their personalities, and capturing them is the start to creating their history. Just imagine looking back over the years, and seeing that personality unfold over time. It all starts here at your baby’s session, and we understand the weight of its importance. Keeping it natural and true to who your baby is will bear the load and make sure it’s authentic.
Letting the baby lead always ensures that authenticity. It makes for a natural experience, not only for the child, but also for the mother. She has the joy of a couple hours free from worry or distraction, and can simply gaze at her lovely little one being their wonderful tiny selves. The session often acts as a respite from the stress of life, and for some that can be a priceless gift. A mother of a new child won’t pass up a moment to spend memorizing every detail of their baby, and in their session they’ll be able to watch their personalities unfold. That’s the beauty of keeping things simple and natural!
