A photoshoot is a celebration of your life. Having your picture taken professionally is a special event, catered to suit your own style and personality, and you come away with wonderful pictures of yourself to keep with you forever. Whether it’s just you or your whole family, your session celebrates every aspect of your life, and it memorializes all that’s important to you so you can treasure them forever. All of this means that your photoshoot is a very happy occasion! Sometimes it might not always seem like it, what with the stress of choosing what to wear and how to present yourself, so here’s a short list of do’s and don’ts to help get rid of the pre-shoot jitters:
•Don’t be afraid to wear beautiful shades of color
Here at the studio we love color, especially muted tones and pastels in various shades of creams, grey, mauve, blush or blue. Our style lends more to a light and airy feel which is complimented by the kind of light we use in our sessions. The camera loves soft fabrics and subtle pops of color, and it makes for such a lovely look. It’s so important to have a color palette picked out to hold to. If you’re not so sure what to pick out, we can help you choose something you love, and please trust that we will guide you towards something that will photograph beautifully!
•Do focus on natural light
Sometimes, the studio just can’t outdo the natural talents of the sun. It has such gorgeous tones and colors in its sunrises and sunsets, and its glow does a wonderful job of accentuating the colors of your outfit. Natural light really compliments your skin tone, and especially brings out pastel palettes and airy tones, so whenever you can get it, its always a plus. Keep this in mind when you’re picking out your outfits and environment, as the lighting can have an effect on both. Do avoid bright heavy shades like neon yellow or bright pink as they can reflect back onto the skin and cause unflattering color casts. Don’t worry, though, we’ll explain all of this in more detail and work with you to find styles that are best suited for natural light while also complimenting the way we edit.
•Do share your ideas and inspiration!
Your photographer isn’t the only one with a say in the style and overall atmosphere of your shoot. A professional understands that it’s all about teamwork when it comes to your session, and your input is where they begin. If you have a specific vision for your shoot, share it with us! We want to know the best way possible to represent you, so we want to get you in on the ground floor to help us build the best session, tailored for you.
•Don’t forget about the background and location
We all have our favorite places to be. For some of us, it’s the woods, and for others it’s the beach. Maybe it’s the mountains or the city for you, but regardless, wherever you go, each place will have its own look and feel. When you’re preparing for your shoot, don’t forget about the location, and what will be appropriate attire. If it doesn’t seem like a big deal, think again. A lush garden will have an entirely different atmosphere than a urban cityscape, for example, and when you’re figuring out how you want your session to look, factor in the location’s environment too. It will help guide your footwear, layers, and color scheme. We will search out a location that suits your personality and desires.
•Keep it simple
Our last and most important tip is this. Our message is one of simplicity and connections. Keeping your color palette simple, your wardrobe options minimal and clothing that is form fitting will allow us to focus on your interactions without the distraction of loud color schemes and busy patterns. Often times these things can get in the way of the real picture so make sure that what you choose compliments and doesn’t pose an issue that will take away from the authentic emotions of your shoot.
Hopefully this small list helps with the nervous jitters, and makes it all more exciting for you! If you focus on just the essentials of your shoot, like the list above, you’ll come away with what you’ve always wanted from a professional photo shoot.
